Programme overview

 

How many machine stoppages do you get for basic issues like damaged relays, switches, loose limit switches and so on?

 

Our Electrical maintenance course places a strong focus on theory and practical skills. Trainees will learn to take machine drawings and a multi-meter and safely trace the cause of the stoppage  in order to decide if it’s a simple fix to get back into production, or if the machine really needs to be left for expert help. The objective of this programme is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to diagnose industrial faults and to carry out minor repairs/ replacements safely and where appropriate. The course will inform the trainee of potential hazards when working with or near electrical equipment and when they need to call a qualified electrician  and how to troubleshoot very safely.

 

Our Centre is quipped with specially designed electrical training boards. Each has 3 sections: single phase household circuits (learning how 1 & 2 way switches, cookers, and showers are wired is a very effective and interesting introduction to electrical circuits!), 24 volt control circuits and finally 3 phase circuits used to control heating on an injection moulding injection unit control circuit. We take safe working/ lock and tag etc. very seriously and impart this to all trainees. The course is limited to 6 places to ensure each trainees gets individual support and access to all equipment.

Additional information 

In order to avail of accreditation on this programme, trainees must attend a 5th day on this course which is generally held 4-6 weeks after the main 4 day programme.  This is a QQI requirement of our validated programme, in order for candidates to successfully achieve a Level 6 Component Award in Industrial Electrical Systems (6N5377). The gap from the main course to the assessment day is intended to allow trainees time to implement what they have learned while on the job/ and also have an opportunity to embed the knowledge and reflect on the skills and knowledge gained. One year’s relevant experience or equivalent is required as a prerequisite for this course. More information and upcoming date can be found here.

Candidates who do not wish to avail of accreditation are still welcome to only attend the scheduled 4 days and receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, trainees will be able to:

  • Describe how to achieve isolation and switching for mechanical maintenance and electrical isolation
  • Describe the interrelationship between cable sixes, current carrying capacities, fuses, circuit breakers and installation conditions
  • Detail the means of protecting against direct contact to include basic insulation, barriers/enclosures, and extra low voltage
  • Detail the means of protecting against indirect contact too include double insulation, automatic disconnection by earthing, residual current device(RCD) and isolating reduced low voltage transformers
  • Describe D.C and A.C single phase and three phase, their relative merits and applications
  • Describe the operation of three phase induction motors, their control protection, connection and testing
  • Interpret wiring, circuit and schematic diagrams
  • Predict voltages at given points in a circuit and measure these using a multi-meter
  • Test a three phase induction motor
  • Construct control circuits using typical components to include functional control switches, emergency control switches , normally open switches, normally closed switches, auxiliary contact, contactors and thermal overloads
  • Construct a direct on line starter (DOL) and reverse control circuits.

Who Is This Course For

This course is primarily designed for Process Technicians/Engineers/Production Shift Supervisors and any technical personnel who wish to gain a good practical knowledge of machine maintenance/troubleshooting and acquire the skills to correct common equipment electrical faults. An ability to read electrical drawings would be an advantage.

Trainees are requested to bring their own multi-meter where possible. A Fluke T5 1000 is preferred.

Trainer Profile

John Farrelly is a qualified electrician and served as maintenance manager for over 20 years in the plastics industry. As a service engineer he provides machine maintenance, calibration and training services to the plastics and medical device industries.

Assessment & Accreditation

This programme is a QQI component (minor) award, certified at Level 6 on the national framework of qualifications – see www.nfq.ie  and is an elective component of major awards. 

The assessment is comprised of a written exam ( 30% of the total grade) plus a practical exam (70% of the total grade). The date of the examination is given to each participant during the course, with full guidance and support given by the Trainer.
