First Polymer Training Achievements 2013

  • IITD Awards 2013- FPT received two awards- Outstanding Achievement in the ‘Networks and Groups’ and ‘Work Placement’ Categories. This is the 3rd year in succession FPT have secured an IITD (Irish Institute of Training and Development) award.
  • Successfully applied (Plastics Ireland) for Springboard funding (446 applications were submitted by colleges to the HEA and just 205 were successful) to devise and deliver a new Level 6 Polymer Technology certificate programme to 30 jobseekers, in conjunction with IT Sligo. This programme will allow progression onto the Level 7 polymer degree or other appropriate Level 7 programme and a cohort of 13 people from industry are also separately enrolled. It’s ideal for those already working in the industry who don’t have any formal qualifications and so don’t have the Level 7 entry requirements.
  • FPT were also nominated to be part of the Forfás ‘Expert Group in Future Skills Needs in Manufacturing up to 2020’ – the report produced from this group’s work highlighted the current and future expected shortages of polymer technicians and engineers within our industry.
  • Successfully ran the first extrusion course at our centre (for many years) back in April 2013, with a brand new American Kuhne extruder on long term loan.
  • Third cohort from the B. Eng. in Polymer Processing graduated in November 2013, the programme continues to be very well subscribed and a lot of interest is consistently being shown.  It’s success is a recognition of industry engagement via our excellent steering group.
